Dhoni clicks a picture with the Vizag groundsmen!

‘Dhoni, Dhoni, Dhoni” was all that could be heard as the match between CSK and DC came to and end!

When the defending champions Chennai Super Kings met the underdogs Delhi Capitals in an IPL 2024 encounter at Vizag, fiery batting along with some insane fireworks was a must. And the match lived up to its expectations, at least for the Mahendra Singh Dhoni fans.

The match saw the five-time champions Super Kings take a humble defeat by the Delhi Capitals by 20 runs, but the fans present in the stadium and watching across the globe did not return home empty-handed. The closing moments of the game glimpsed the bonkers power-hitting of the vintage MS Dhoni. The ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium witnessed the former Chennai Super Kings’ captain and World Cup-winning legend Dhoni’s crazy batting.

Dhoni Finishes off in Style!

Though the match did not go in favor of the defending champions, fans across the world saw “Thala” hitting the ball all over the stadium! Playing with a strike rate of 231, Dhoni entered and enthralled the cricketing fans with some amazing shots around the park, which included a banger one-handed six towards long-off.

The crowd erupted with cheers as the legend entered the field, and he got going from the word go. He entered to a huge ovation when CSK needed 72 to win off 24 deliveries, and though the match seemed all but done, people were stuck to their seats to watch Dhoni bat for the first time in over a year. CSK didn’t win the match, but the man, the legend, won people’s hearts with his insane power hitting.

What Happened in the Match?

DC chose to bat first after winning the toss to begin the match. A returning Prithvi Shaw (43 in 27 balls, four boundaries, two sixes) and David Warner (52 in 35 balls, five fours, three sixes) got things going with a 93-run opening combination. DC lost their way for a time after the openers were dismissed, but in the end, Rishabh Pant (51 in 32 balls, four boundaries, three sixes) scored some rapid runs to lead the team to 191/5 in their 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers for CSK was Matheesha Pathirana (3/31).

Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) and Mukesh Kumar (3/21) worried the CSK hitters with their line and length during the 192-run chase, and at one stage, CSK was 75/3 in 10.2 overs. Daryl Mitchell (34 in 26 balls, one four, two sixes), MS Dhoni (37* in 16 balls, four boundaries, three sixes), and Ajinkya Rahane (45 in 30 balls, with five fours and two sixes) all had useful performances, but DC won by 20 runs, limiting the five-time winners to 171/6.

Though the match saw the returning Rishabh Pant’s comeback to form with a brisk half-century, it was all about MS “The Legend” Dhoni.

Dhoni Winning Hearts After the Match

MS Dhoni didn’t stop after his cameo as he went on to admire the groundsmen who made the pitch match-ready and clicked photos with them. He was seen wearing an ice pack while all this was happening, but the pain didn’t stop the man from doing what he does – spread smiles across faces.

Following the game, CSK’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle took to Instagram and shared a picture of Dhoni with ground staff, all smiling and cheering.

“In the ground of memories! #DCvCSK #WhistlePodu #Yellove,” tweeted CSK.

Clinching their first win of the season after defeating CSK, the Delhi Capitals climbed to the seventh spot with a win and two losses. The Chennai Super Kings slipped to the third spot after the defeat with two wins and one loss.
